What is the “Social Brain” Chair?
The “Social Brain” Chair is a centre for analysis and public action in the field of social neuroscience. Social neuroscience is an incipient field of research and thinking that explores the neurobiological bases of human social behavior. Its theoretical and experimental basis is founded on the most recent findings of disciplines such as neuroimaging, neurobiology, evolutionary anthropology, cognitive psychology, robotics, linguistics and even philosophy.
Contributions to this discipline are changing, sometimes radically, our way of understanding the hows and whys of many social phenomena, to such an extent that they are now essential in explaining contemporary society.

Background

In June, 2006 the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) and the Barcelona City Council signed an agreement to create the “Social Brain” Chair at the UAB with the support of the Barcelona City Council. The Chair was associated to the Department of Psychiatry and Legal Medicine at the same university and has its head offices in Hospital del Mar.

Objectives

The Chair’s aim consists of familiarizing society with the new and emerging field of social neuroscience. This purpose involves successfully attaining the following objectives:

1. Generate knowledge in the area of social neuroscience.

2. Make the knowledge derived from social neuroscience accessible

3. Introduce knowledge in an active and interactive way
