The First "Barcelona Social Brain" Conference, organized by the New York Academy of Sciences, the Fundació Catalana per a la Recerca i la Innovació, the Càtedra UAB "el cervell social" and the European Science Foundation. This November, international scientific leaders and young investigators will convene for the first Barcelona Social Brain Conference, an exciting two-day event featuring talks, poster presentations, and a public lecture on the interdisciplinary field of social neuroscience

The aim of the workshop SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY OF AGREEMENT, which is co-funded by the European Science Foundation (ESF),  is to bring together researchers from different disciplines (such as social psychology, sociobiology, social neuroscience, artificial intelligence) who can contribute to a better understanding of agreement in social contexts among multi-agent artificial systems. Presently, there is not a shared and dominant model of agreement as mental attitude, as decision and action, and as a social relationship. A fruitful dialogue and transfer of knowledge among these disciplines is needed for the construction of multi-agent-systems and to use multi-agent-systems to simulate social systems.

We open the workshop with the round table, Empathy and Conflicts Resolutions. The round table will be lead by the Primary School teacher Xus de Miguel and the primatologist Carme Maté. After the debate, we will hold a lecture about The Virtual Reality of Sex, Race and Class Differences.  Travis Ross, a prestigious research group member run by Prof. Edward Castronova (from the Indiana University Bloomington) will talk about racism and sexism conflicts in Internet Virtual New Communities. We urge everyone to sign up for our workshop on deadlock behaviors and our capacity for empathy through interactive activities.

During this workshop, scientists which are part of the The Evolution of Cooperation and Trading (TECT) Research Programme will explore new research perspectives on the evolution of cooperation and trading, through empirical, theoretical and modeling methods, on an array of organisms, ranging from microorganisms to human societies. 

El “Primavera Social Brain” es un ciclo de conferencias ofrecidas por científicos internacionales expertos en campos tan variados como la robótica, la etología, la psiquiatría, la psicología evolutiva o la primatología, y que sin embargo tienen un interés común: comprender el funcionamiento del ser humano. Alex Kacelnik  con su charla titulada "El uso de herramientas e inteligencia: ¿qué fue primero, el huevo o la cuerva?" será el encargado de abrir esta actividad primaveral, el jueves 10 de Abril a las 11:30 en la Facultad de Humanidades de la Universitat Pompeu Fabra.

El próximo Noviembre dará comienzo la 2ª edición del premio “Profesor Jordi Sabater Pi”. Esta iniciativa invita al alumnado a elaborar un documento audiovisual sobre el comportamiento social desde una perspectiva evolutiva.

En la actividad “Ciència & Ficció”, el celuloide es el responsable de dibujar un marco de la sociedad susceptible a un debate científico sobre el comportamiento y el pensamiento social.

The workshop “Tan monos com jo” is inscribed in the educational framework Èxit 2: workshops in extracurricular contexts for curricular diversification organised by the Consorci d’Educació de Barcelona and directed by secondary students. This workshop, lasting approximately 30 hours, will take place for the first time during the 2007-2008 school year in eight schools from around Barcelona, which will qualify them as possible candidates to the “Professor Jordi Sabater Pi” awards organised by the chair of “El Cervell Social”.

The chair "the social brain" will hold a dialog between the anthropologist  Scott Atran and the psychiatrist Adolf Tobeña titled SOCIAL AND PERSONALITY DYNAMICS IN ISLAMIC TERRORISM. This event will take place next November 21st, at 18:00 pm, in the auditorium of the Parc de Recerca Biomèdica Barcelona (PRBB).

The seminar “THE TWO FACES OF FEAR”, organized by the Chair “the social brain” from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, invites you to find out the answers behind questions such as why do we feel fear? When it results into pleasure?  or Why are some people hooked on it? The 6th and 7th of October at 16:00h, at the Miramar building, in the Festival Internacional de Cinema de Catalunya – Sitges 2007.

The chair “El Cervell Social” collaborated with the Department of Psychology of the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) in the organisation of the course EL CERVELL SOCIAL which will be held at the “8th Summer University of Ibiza and Formentera.

In February 2007, the chair “El Cervell Social” in collaboration with the Barcelona Zoo and the Consorci d’Educació has opened the convocation of the first edition of the “Professor Jordi Sabater Pi”. This initiative, addressed to secondary school students, which hopes to bring primatology and biology to the younger population with the aim of raising awareness of the animal world and dig deeper into the evolutionary roots of our behaviour.

At this conference, the famed evolutionary biologist Robert Trivers dealt with self deception as a biological mechanism which appears adaptive on most occasions, and therefore, beneficial for both the individual and the species. Although, sometimes, it can become deleterious…

Human societies are distinguished for the gift and the punishment of regulating life in society, which in part defines us as an ultra social species. Yet, how and when did we adopt these norms? Over a period of three days, a group of researchers discussed the origin of ultra social behaviour and the impact of language on the makeup of societies..

Monday, February 8th, there will be a discussion presented by the chair “El Cervell Social” at the FNAC in L’Illa Diagonal, followed by the projection of a documentary titled “Under the skin of the conflict”.
